A car accident can cause traumatic brain injury

A car accident can be minor or severe, and it can cause numerous injuries, including death. One possible injury is brain damage, and it also can range from minor to severe.

Unlike many other parts of the body, the brain is unable to fully heal, so, depending on the severity of the injury, the effects can last a lifetime.

Types of traumatic brain injury and associated symptoms

According to Healthline, there are numerous causes of traumatic brain injury, and a car accident is one of them. TBI refers to various types of injuries, and the most common ones associated with car accidents are contusions, concussions and closed head injuries.

The brain has four lobes, and each one is responsible for specific functions. Symptoms largely depend on whether the blow to the head was in the front, side, top or back area of the brain. For a mild concussion, symptoms may include headaches, blurred vision and confusion for a couple of days. For more severe injuries, symptoms may include:

  • Seizures
  • Memory issues
  • Speaking difficulties
  • Personality changes
  • Breathing problems
  • Movement and coordination difficulties

Treatment and prognosis of TBI

According to the Brain Injury Association of America, the treatment and outlook of brain diseases vary drastically depending on the location and severity. A concussion may require only at-home care until symptoms subside, while more severe types of TBI often require numerous phases of treatment with lifetime rehabilitation.

Most people with moderate to severe injuries require hospitalization, typically in the intensive care unit. Once stabilized, a patient goes through stages of rehabilitation, and the doctors may prescribe various medications that range from pain killers to anti-anxiety meds.

Some victims of TBI are eventually able to function fairly normally and independently, while others may need home health services throughout their lives.
